Following Donald Trump’s historic victory, a number of mayors nationwide have banded together, vowing to continue violating federal law.
As many of you are aware, across the nation are hundreds of so-called “sanctuary cities,” which refuse to report illegal immigrants to federal authorities for only having “illegal” status.
Sanctuary cities can also bar their employees, including police, from asking about a person’s immigration status.
Needless to say, the mayors of those cities aren’t too thrilled with Trump’s policy on deportations. “To all those who are, after Tuesday’s election, very nervous and filled with anxiety as we’ve spoken to, you are safe in Chicago, you are secure in Chicago and you are supported in Chicago,”
Mayor Rahm Emanuel said during a press conference. He concluded, “Chicago will always be a sanctuary city.” Officials in New York, Seattle, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Oakland, Providence, Santa Fe, Denver, and Washington, D.C. have also vowed the same.
For some reason, they’d rather bear the costs of illegal immigration. It’s amazing that for political purposes, these officials think they get to pick and choose which laws to obey. I doubt they’d be too happy if citizens decided to opt-out of paying their taxes, but that’s a whole other story. If such cities want to opt-out of federal laws, Trump is going to opt them out of federal funding.

Charles Krauthammer believes President-elect Donald Trump can and should refuse federal funding for
sanctuary cities if they continue to harbor illegal immigrants. “I think Trump would be within his rights to withhold funds, and he should,” Krauthammer said on Fox News’ “Special Report” Wednesday.
And the Democrats are making a big bet — and a mistaken one — if they decide that they’re going to defy the federal government and what seems to be common sense: control your borders,” Krauthammer added.
Trump previously vowed in his contract with the American voter to “cancel all federal funding to sanctuary cities.” On Tuesday, Trump’s immigration advisor Kris Kobach explained how they would do that on Fox and Friends. “These mayors, what they aren’t saying, is they receive tons of dollars in federal grants and president-elect Trump has made clear that sanctuary cities may see some of that money dry up if they are continuing to defy federal law.”
And it’s not just Trump fed up with their antics. Back in July, Obama’s Justice Department adopted new policies that would bar some sanctuary cities from receiving federal law enforcement grants.
What possible benefit could there be in these cities continuing to defy Trump? Not only do they bear the costs associated with illegal immigration, now they pay for it in the form of lost funding. If they keep this up, Trump will be their second worry.
Their citizens voting against them will be the first.
