DOCKWORKERS’ Death: Union, Terminal Operators Differ Over Safety Measures

Following the death of about four dockworkers at Lagos ports in the last nine months, dockworkers under the aegis of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN and terminal operators have disagreed over safety of workers at the ports.

While the MWUN is alleging that some of the terminal operators have failed in their responsibility of providing safety gears for its members, terminal operators on their part claim that they provide dockworkers with the necessary safety gears.

Acting Managing Director of Ports and Cargo Handling Services, PCHS, Mohammed Bulangu, said it is not true that terminal operators are not providing dockworkers with the relevant safety gears for their operations.

Bulangu said that PCHS “provides all their dockworkers with the necessary safety gears but that most of the times they (dockworkers) refuse to put them on. They refuse to wear them. Even the reflective overall that is given to them they refuse to wear them, preferring to wear it half way.”

On his part, President General of the MWUN, Tony Emmanuel Nted, explained that most of the terminal operators are guilty of the neglect of the safety standard for labour at their terminal.
